Threat to the environment
The increase in automotive vehicles on roads and increasing power outages have increased the demand for lead acid batteries around the world. Owing to their toxic components, these heavily used batteries pose a significant threat to the ecology and human health, unless they are disposed and recycled under environmental friendlyconditions.
In the absence of proper disposal facilities and legislation regarding the recycling of lead acid batteries, they usually find their way to backyard smelting units. Here, lead is recovered from these batteries in a very crude manner, which degrades the surrounding area and also affects the workers.
